September 9, 2023

Another tough day, but the weather wasn't as hot as it has been.  I caught 3 bowfin, 3 largemouth Bass, 2 warmouth, 2 channel catfish, 1 warmouth x green sunfish hybrid, 1 white bass, and 1 freshwater drum.

  1. Wow! you've been catching some great fish inspite of the hot weather. It's incredible you're pushing 80 species on fly this year, I don't think I have anything close to that many species on my entire life list. Those were some great walleye you caught back in August and your friend with that awesome flathead - wow! Plus you keep piling up the bowfin, your bowfin count has to be off the charts by now.
I went up to Boone, IA last weekend trying for a flathead but couldn't seal the deal at one point I saw a group of suckers feeding along the shore suddenly scatter and I cast all around but blanked. Went up to the big eddy and there was a guy who had caught 3 flatheads on conventional tackle. So maybe they were all up there. River looked bad, really low with bluegreen algae bloom, Saylorville has some algae too, and there was a fish kill at Red Rock.

    1. 79 Species on fly so far in 2023. I hope I can get at least one more, just to make it an even 80...but that remains to be seen. It was just one walleye in August, but it happened to be a doozy! Although I already reached the 100 lifetime bowfin on fly goal in less than a year, now I'm trying for 100 bowfin on fly in a single calendar year. As of now, I just need 6 more. So... 94 this year, 46 last year... 140 in just over a year since I started catching them on fly. Pretty good! It's gotten pretty difficult for the past few months...I see plenty gulping air, but can't catch 'em!
That's cool you were in/near the right area to catch some more Flatheads on fly! I hope you get some more of them SOON. :)
