After realizing I was close to achieving 500 Koi on fly (lifetime), I decided to get after them one more time this year.
It was tough, fish weren't particularly willing to collaborate with my efforts. Many more anglers were about than I've ever seen at this location. Made for a long afternoon... but once the other anglers left, the fishing seemed to pick up. I ended up catching 9 Koi (exactly what I needed to reach 500), and 6 Goldfish.
Here's some of my favorites of the day:
This beauty was #500! And it was one I don't believe I've caught before. |

I hope you guys didn't get any tornado damage!
ReplyDelete500 koi is unreal!! And they're all so cool looking - my guess is it's significantly fewer than 500 people in the US, (maybe the world?) who have ever done such a thing. Over 200 bowfin on fly is incredible too. Just about ready to start the new season here in Iowa. Good luck!!
Thanks for checking in, Mark! No tornado damage, but our area continues to get hit with tornado-bearing storms. There's been at least 32 tornadoes in the St Louis area so far in 2025. Remember when tornadoes used to be rare?
ReplyDeleteI've caught 30 Bowfin on fly so far this year. Probably have lost that many more. I've lost a high percentage of Grass Carp already this year. I've only managed to land 7. 16 more will put me at 300 Grass Carp on fly. May or may not happen this year. Not traveling to fish much this year, so I'm at 30 species for 2025 (and no new ones), and may not get too many more.
Good luck on your fishing this year!
